User beware: not all natural remedies work the way you think they will.
Case in point, I have been drinking a red pepper tea for seasonal allergies. Something in the air seems to be really bothering me these past two weeks for some odd reason -- nearby forest fires while on vacation? So I have been drinking 2 cups of red pepper tea per day instead of just my normal one to none. Normally, I am fine with this tea blend and I have used it many times before --I always prefer natural remedies to pharmaceutical drugs-- with much success, but the past few days I have found myself becoming incredibly dizzy, to the point of almost passing out, after my second cup of tea.
It finally occurred to me that it was in the red pepper tea that was causing my dizziness, but I couldn't figure out exactly why. After some reading here on-line today I discovered that the red pepper tea has also been used to lower blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure and when combined with potassium the blood pressure effect is significantly increased --because the potassium takes the place of sodium stored in body cells, which in turn causes a drop in blood pressure. And here I have been eating a banana after my intense workouts these past few days --to help reduce muscle pain ... lactic acid build-up. Turns out this post-workout banana has been preceding my second cup of red pepper tea each day. I have normal to low blood pressure already, being tall and thin, so lowering my blood pressure is not something I need to be doing. So, now I know: red pepper tea and bananas do not mix for me! But maybe if you have high blood pressure and you want to try a natural remedy for lowering blood pressure (have heard blood pressure medications have some nasty side-effects!) the red pepper tea and banana combo just might be the ticket for you.
[Side Note: I do have to wonder though ... would it be safe to use lowering my blood pressure to the point of dizziness in order to induce sleep????? I have horrible insomnia and most sleeping pills don't work well for me, but I slept well on the dizzy nights.]

Dizzying Effect of Natural Remedy: Red Pepper Tea

Inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes ...
Yes, inspiration truly comes in all forms, shapes and sizes ... often chancing upon the gentle winds of serendipity. I love it when I am able to take an insult and spin it into a positive light, perhaps in that respect despite all of the hardships I've suffered in my personal life, I have somehow retained my childlike innocence? Maybe there's hope for me yet?
Music is a major source of inspiration for me. I'm listening to Dylan again tonight. I'm not sure why, but Bob Dylan's music feels like a piece of home to me ... A really big piece. Think if I had to give up all music and I could only pick one artist's music to keep in my life it would probably have to be Dylan for me. Then again, maybe that's just the place I am at in my life right now? At other times, I'd probably say Jimi Hendrix felt like 'home'. How about you? Who's the artist you simply could not live without?

P.S. Dylan seems to help fend off headaches as well ... No joke, I had a bad headache coming on one evening and 45 minutes of soothing Dylan songs later --with no pills-- and my headache was completely gone. Gotta love it!

We are none of us promised a tomorrow ....
The following is a letter I wrote to a friend this evening. He has been having visions of his wife dying and –understandably—these visions are truly troubling for him. His wife was diagnosed and treated for both breast and ovarian cancer not long ago. She is, no doubt, in the battle of her life. But my friend's wife has such an amazing, resilient and loving spirit and she has so many people storming heaven with prayers for her. My friend, I think, is having a hard time not just dealing with the very real possibility of losing his wife, but he is also dealing with feelings of recent loss for other loved ones in his life.
I share these words with you, because I sense that they will perhaps speak to many people … Oddly enough, when I read back over these words written to my friend, I realize that that these words also speak to me and issues I have been dealing with in my own personal life on a different level. God sure does work in mysterious wonderful ways, does he not???

“Dear YYYYYYY,
Good for you on treating Beth so well. As for your vision ... These things, the 'gift of sight’ that you have, can be dual-edged sword. You have to be willing to acknowledge the influence of your own personal fears onto the projection of what you 'see', and in doing so you have to be willing to admit that what you are most likely sensing is your own personal reaction to a very possible outcome in your foreseeable future. On some level, your subconscious mind must think that you need to begin dealing with the possibility of XXXXX’s death on some level. You have to begin processing your fear of this possibility not because this will happen, but more likely because you deeply fear that it could happen and sub-consciously you don't think --given all of the other losses of loved ones in your life of late-- that you will be able to handle her death if and when it comes to pass.
If you start swallowing and digesting the eventual acceptance of the possibility of XXXXX’s death now, then you won't completely lose it if it does ever happen. The above being said, XXXXX needs you to be her rock right now! You are her anchor and you have got to push her to be strong and to fight to keep her hope, to keep going and to heal. I truly believe that a good 80 - 90% of healing takes place in the mind and the heart. Our spirits have to literally will our physical bodies to return to a state of balance and equilibrium. Without the will to live, our bodies will not heal and eventually they will begin to crumble. So YYYYYY, from this moment forward: I would suggest focusing on the HERE and NOW. Focus on XXXXX healing and finding her own inner peace. Make the most of every single minute you have together, because we are none of us promised a tomorrow. The one truth we all share is Death and eventually it will come for us all. The key, I think, is to be ready to meet Death when he comes for us --or those that we love-- by living a life worth living TODAY. This means that we willfully choose to put our love, time and efforts where they will count the most and do the most good.
As I read over what I have written above, it occurs to me that maybe these were words that I needed to hear, for myself, as well. Anyhow, remember to keep your Faith and Hope. Let God’s eternal LOVE shore you up and don’t forget to PRAY!! For, I truly believe in the power of prayer … Offer up what you can't handle to God . Just lay it at His feet and let Him carry it for you: AND HE WILL!
I will keep you and XXXX in my ongoing thoughts and prayers, YYYYYY. Hang in there, my dear friend!
Love,
Isabelle”

Chasing Butterflies, Ladybugs & Sleep ...
I have just discovered a new 'natural' sleep aid. It is called "Deep Sleep" and it is made from extract of California Poppy. I was skeptical at first, because most natural sleep aids have little effect on me. They make me drowsy and sometimes take the edge off, but my natural instinct is to fight sleep ... so they usually don't help me to actually sleep. The latter aside, I am willing to try new things because I don't like taking medicines of any sort --especially sleeping pills-- long term.
So I gave this "Deep Sleep", natural sleep aid a try. It takes awhile to kick in, but when it does it knocks you out. It kept me out for a good 6 hours, which is a good night of sleep for me. It took me awhile to shake off the grogginess afterwards too, but maybe my body just needs to get used to this new input? I need to do some more research on this form of sleep aid. I mean don't they make hard core drugs from poppies? Opium, heroin? So I have to wonder if taking this sleep aid will have detrimental side effects in the long run? But in the meantime, I may see some nights with more than 3 (or zero) hours of sleep --and zero seems to be my norm of late-- in my immediate future. I guess that's something, right??????
Photo of my own feet shortly?
I love poppies ... always have. Used to love running barefoot through fields of these, in Northern California, chasing after butterflies and lady bugs =) ... So perhaps it is fitting that poppies are now enabling me to find peace in the form of restful, regenerative sleep.
Here's a song that seems to go rather well with chasing butterflies, sleep or whatever you may be after. This song has such an upbeat whimsical, almost child-like innocence to it, from my perspective ... Have a fabulous weekend, ya'll!

Michelle's "Winging It" Homemade Salsa
I am a bit of a health food 'nut' -- my kid's words, not mine --and into natural healing. Currently, I am fighting a cold, the flu (?), or something?! My throat is incredibly sore and my sinuses are stuffy, so I'm making some of my homemade salsa. It's a great immune system booster! Makes sore throats feel better and opens sinuses too.
As I've said before, I hate to follow recipes; I'm also terrible about writing my own creations down on paper. That being said: here is Ken's attempt at trying to quantify my creation. : )
If you're in an experimental mood or feeling lousy: give it a try. Enjoy!
11/3/2009 I've had a chance to remake the salsa using Ken's 'quantification' since this posting. I've made a few minor adjustments. Bottom line is: the TASTE has the final say. But, I've marked tweaks with an '*' character. Only added a bit more salt (I LOVE salt!), tad bit more Cilantro, and a dash more Olive Oil and Red Wine Vinegar. Let me know what you think.
Michelle's "Winging It" Homemade Salsa
2 cans "petite cut" tomatoes, or 4 cups chopped fresh tomato (Roma or other)
1/2 of a medium red bell pepper chopped
1/2 cup purple onion chopped
4 scallions (green onions) -- top green part only -- chopped
1 medium Serrano (hot) pepper (1 pepper produces moderately spicy; add more or less to taste -- I like to put two peppers == !HOT! ... but kids won't eat that : ( )
1 tsp. finely chopped garlic from jar (or 1/2 clove if fresh)
*1/3 cup (densely packed) cilantro (fresh) finely chopped (but not overdone: want to keep juices in!)
*2.5 tbsp. red wine vinegar
*1.5 tbsp. olive oil (EVOO is best)
*1 tsp. salt (to taste)
1 level tsp. sugar (secret ingredient)
2-3 turns fresh ground black pepper (to taste)
Tip: This salsa tastes better after it has sat overnight ... then, all of the juices have had a chance to meld.
VIP: Needs to be REFRIGERATED!!! Should keep for up to two weeks.
Enjoy!
