My starting pass: New Lyrics for song "Old Lang Syne"

Initial thoughts ....

Should old acquaintances be forgotten?
Probably so, or you would have kept in touch,
But sometimes the effort is just too much.
Nonetheless, let's raise a glass and drink a toast
to wish them well as we ring in the new year.
Then with toast we leave them rest, with thoughts
best left behind. For time's passing and the new
year has begun. Gather round everyone and lay
your ghosts to rest. A toast to Auld Lang Syne!

Edits after some further thought and expansion ... Feel free to take it from here.

Should old acquaintances be forgotten?
And all memories composed left so behind?
The question begs repeat ….
Should old acquaintances be forgotten?
And all memories composed left so behind?
[Probably so, or you would have kept in touch,
But sometimes, perhaps the effort is too much.]

Take a moment, stir your drink and think …
Then I'll ask you once more,
With earnest thought I implore:
Should old acquaintances be forgotten?
And all memories composed left so behind?
And though the answer be a resounding “yes”,
Let us pause a moment to rewind, nonetheless.

Should old acquaintances be forgotten?
And all memories composed left so behind?
The question's already been answered [by inaction*], it would seem.
And so we'll raise our glasses and drink a heartfelt toast.
We'll wish them well, our old acquaintances,
And wish them the very best any given year can offer.

A New Year's toast all said and done in kind,
We'll leave these souls to rest, with thoughts best left behind.
For time waits for no man and the New Year's just been rung.
So Gather you round, young and old alike, each and everyone,
And lay your ghosts to rest. A toast to Auld Lang Syne!

Side/End Note:  I like to think of this toast being said/sung just before the clock begins striking out the twelve notes ushering in the New Year ... kind like a momentary pause in the keeping of time, meant solely for the purpose of remembrance.  Well the good news is that, after several edits, my migraine finally cleared and I actually 'wrote' 2018 in the copyright note above.  Perhaps the latter pries me out of the mud of 2017 --per the post leading to this subsequent musing-- and sets me firmly onto the path of 2018?   I also figured out what "old lang syne" means to me, means in the song.  I think it is a call to remember those who we may have forgotten in order to wish them well, so that we can finally let them go in the physical sense of this concrete, material world.  Those who have touched our lives are never truly forgotten in the heart.  For these I hold, in a spiritual sense, that it will always remain "until we meet again", likely in the next life.

Also occurs to me upon further reflection that "old acquaintances" could also refer to personal regrets from a year rapidly drawing to a close ... e.g., I didn't finish writing my latest book, didn't make it skydiving just yet, etc..  "Time waits for no man", but perhaps it will wait for a woman? ; )  Anyway, it means there is no time to harbor regret during this blink of an eye we call a life.  So in this song it's not just the passing of our relationships with people that we may regret, but also thoughts and ideas we may have failed to bring fully into fruition during the course of a given year.  Maybe  "Old Lang Syne" is just giving ourselves permission to let all of these things go?  I kind like the thought of that.  How about you???
